What exactly is Kosher?

You may have heard of kosher or have an interest in having and keeping a kosher kitchen, but you many not be 100% sure what that means. As kosher kitchen designers for over 15 years, we’re happy to help you understand what a kosher kitchen involves.

The main idea behind a kosher kitchen is keeping meat and dairy separate from each other as it is forbidden to cook or eat the two together. It is not necessary to have a large kitchen in order to do this. A space that allows for two work areas is definitely easier to cook in though. Ideally a well designed kosher kitchen will have separate sinks, dishwashers and cooking appliances. Plenty of storage and counter space to work comfortably for both meat and dairy is important as well. If space is too tight to allow for this, then we work with 2 bowled sinks and as many separate appliances as possible. One would then learn how to “kosher” their oven between meat and dairy usage. It is not necessary to have two refrigerators.
